Metal roof waterproofing is a very important and professional topic. If not handled properly, leakage can easily occur. The primary principle of waterproofing metal roofs is not to block, but to quickly drain the water. So when choosing waterproof materials, it is recommended to choose polymer waterproof rolls as the waterproof layer, such as TPO and PVC, but attention should be paid to their compatibility with metal roofs, as well as their weather resistance and UV resistance.
Attention to Oneself During the Construction Process
The Construction Process Stage (Which Is the Most Prone to Problems)
Grassroots treatment: Before construction, the base must be thoroughly cleaned to ensure that there is no dust, oil stains, rust, or old sealant. This is a prerequisite for ensuring the adhesion of coatings or coils.
Fastener Construction: The screw should be placed on the peak of the wave, not the valley, to avoid water accumulation. The screw should be inserted vertically with moderate force to ensure that the waterproof gasket is compressed and deformed without excessive compression leading to aging and failure.
Joint Treatment: Longitudinal overlap: There should be sufficient overlap length (usually not less than 150mm), and special sealing strips or sealants should be used for sealing.
Horizontal overlap: Attention should also be paid to the direction and length of the overlap to avoid the water facing surface.
Node Processing (top priority): Flashing board: The flipping height must be sufficient (usually ≥ 250mm), the lower end should be pressed onto the roof panel, the overlapping length should be sufficient, and both sides should be sealed with sealant.
Penetrating component: Adopting the "cut" installation method, that is, the upper opening of the waterproof base is embedded under the metal plate, and the lower opening is pressed above the metal plate to form a "raincoat style" waterproof. The surrounding area must be tightly sealed with sealant.
Skylight panel: Special edge banding and weather resistant sealant should be used at the overlap with the skylight panel.
Acceptance and Maintenance Phase
Acceptance test: It is recommended to conduct a 24-hour water immersion test after construction is completed, simulating heavy rain conditions, and checking for any leakage points under the roof.
Regular Maintenance: Check at least twice a year (before and after the rainy season). Clean up the water, leaves, and debris in the house area, and keep the drainage gutter unobstructed. Key inspection: whether the sealant is cracked or aged; Whether the coating layer is peeling or powdering; Are the fasteners loose; Whether the flashing board is cracked or curled. Timely repair: promptly address any minor issues to prevent small holes from becoming major disasters.
