The waterproof effect and service life of TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) roofs largely depend on the construction details. A common misconception is to only focus on the quality of the coil material itself, while neglecting key aspects such as base treatment, welding parameters, and node sealing, which are often the main causes of later leakage.
The following are the key details that need to be paid attention to during the installation process of TPO roofing:
1.Grassroots requirements: The grassroots must be solid, flat, dry, and clean. The thickness of the base layer of the profiled steel plate should not be less than 0.75mm, and the fixing screw parts should be reinforced with homogeneous rolls. The strength of the concrete base layer shall not be less than C20, and the thickness shall not be less than 40mm.
2.Material pretreatment: After the roll is laid and unfolded, it is recommended to leave it for 15-30 minutes to release stress, which can effectively reduce wrinkling during welding.
3.Trial welding and personnel: Before formal welding, a trial welding must be conducted to determine the optimal temperature and speed. Operators must hold a certificate before taking up their posts.
1.Cleaning and Deoxygenation: Before welding, the overlap area must be thoroughly cleaned to remove dust, oil, and water stains. Some TPO materials require surface oxidation layer treatment to ensure firm welding.
2.Overlap specification: In mechanical fixing systems, the overlap width should not be less than 120mm, and the weld width should not be less than 40mm.
3.Standardized welding: The recommended sequence is spot welding → pre welding → cleaning → actual welding. Large scale automatic welding machines are used to ensure quality, while manual welding guns are used to handle detailed nodes.
4.Quality inspection: During construction, crochet hooks and other tools should be used to timely inspect the welds. If any missing or virtual welding is found, a covering strip should be used to repair it.
1.Key nodes need to be strengthened: for areas such as internal and external corners, pipe roots, skylights, and eaves gutters, homogeneous TPO rolls or prefabricated components should be used as additional layers.
2.Sealing at the end: The end of the facade roll must be mechanically fixed with metal pressure strips and sealed with matching sealing paste to prevent water leakage.
1.Fixed component arrangement: When mechanically fixing, the spacing between screws and washers should be determined based on wind load calculations. The wind pressure in areas such as the edges and corners of the roof is high, and the fixing components must be densified.
2.Finished product protection: It is strictly prohibited to walk on the pre laid roll with spiked shoes. When carrying out other types of work in the future, special attention should be paid to protecting the completed waterproof layer.
1.Steel structure roofing: TPO mechanical fixing system should be given priority consideration. During construction, the adhesive should be evenly applied along the wave crest of the profiled steel plate, and after laying, it should be promptly rolled and vented.
2.Flame retardant requirements: For buildings with high fire resistance requirements (such as factories), TPO rolls with B1 level flame retardant performance can be directly selected.
3.Cold roof effect: Light colored TPO roll material has high reflectivity, which can effectively reduce roof temperature and achieve energy conservation.
Summary:
The key to successfully installing TPO roof lies in: (1) proper surface treatment, (2) accurate welding parameters, and (3) reliable sealing of detailed nodes. It is recommended that the construction team strictly follow the technical specifications and keep quality inspection records throughout the entire process.
